continuous fibers in a ductile matrix (Figure 8.3).
Such a composite has two different sets of mechanical properties,
depending on whether the external loads are applied εf(parallel) to the
fibers or perpendicular to them (in serial ). In the following analysis, the
following terms will be used:
V f = the volume fraction of fiber in the composite
E m , E f , E c = the tensile elastic moduli of the matrix, fiber, and com-
posite (at some value of V f ), respectively
σ u(f ) , σ u(m) = the ultimate tensile strengths of the fiber and the matrix,
respectively
σ max = maximum strength of the composite (at some value of V f )
