In-Depth Information
Classes & Costs
There are 1st and 2nd classes on most Italian trains; a 1st-class ticket costs just less than double the price of
a 2nd-class one. There's not a huge amount of difference between the two - just a bit more space in first
class, along with complimentary tea and coffee.
If you are taking a short trip, check the difference between the regionale and IC/ freccia ticket prices, as
regionale tickets are always considerably cheaper - you might arrive 10 minutes earlier on an IC or freccia
service, but you'll also pay €5 or more for the privilege. Check up-to-date prices of routes on
www.trenitalia.com .
Left Luggage
Most train stations have either a guarded left-luggage office or self-service lockers. The guarded offices are
usually open 24 hours or 6am to midnight and charge around €4 per 12 hours for each piece of luggage. In
Florence, it's €5 for the first five hours, and then €0.70 per hour from six to 12 hours and €0.30 per hour
after that.
