This medieval jousting com-
petition is held in Piazza Grande on the third Saturday of June and first Sunday of
September. It's the highlight of the year for the city's four
quartieri
(quarters), each of
which puts forward a team of 'knights'.

Bruce Chatwin's travel books and is decorated accordingly. The nicest room is 'Utz', so
request this one if you can. The location is hard to beat.

Franca has a bubbly personality and is remarkably helpful (she even picks guests up from
the railway station). Located centimetres from Piazza Grande, her B&B has nine simple
rooms; some have kitchenettes and views of the square, and most suffer from a lack of
noise insulation. Breakfast is brought to your room at a pre-agreed time.
