Great fun is to walk or jump on a tour boat and explore the waterways flanked by
faded, peeling apartments and brightly decorated with strings of washing hanging out to
dry. What this area lacks in gondolas and tourists, it makes up for with a certain shabby-
chic charm, and tow paths intersected with the occasional waterside cafe.
End 'Little Venice' explorations on a high on gorgeous Piazza dei Domenicani , across the
bridge at the northern end of Via Borra. Chiesa di Santa Catarina MAP GOOGLE MAP , with its
ancient, thick stone walls, stands sentry on the western side of the square as it did for the
Medicis four centuries ago.
ART GALLERY
Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori
(Via San Jacopo in Acquaviva 65; adult/reduced €4/2; 10am-1pm & 4-7pm Tue-Sun) This gallery in
a pretty park features works by the 19th-century Italian Impressionist Macchiaioli school
led by Livorno-born Giovanni Fattori. The group, inspired by the Parisian Barbizon
school, flouted stringent academic art conventions and worked directly from nature, em-
phasising immediacy and freshness through patches, or 'stains' (macchia), of colour.
Museo di Storia Naturale del Mediterraneo
(Via Roma 234; adult/reduced €6/3; 9am-1pm Wed & Fri, to 7pm Tue, Thu & Sat, 3-7pm Sun; )
Livorno's hands-on Natural History Museum is an exhaustive, first-rate museum experi-
ence for the natural sciences. Temporary exhibits rotate continually, while the highlight of
the permanent collection is a 20m-long common whale skeleton called Annie.
