This doyen of Pisan hotels, run with pride by the Piegaja fam-
ily since 1837, offers old-world luxury accompanied by warm, attentive service. The word
on the street says rooms vary, but those we saw were the perfect shabby-chic mix of
Grand Tour antique - love the parquet floors and flashes of exposed stone - and modern-
day comfort.
The unquestionable highlight is an aperitif flopped on a sofa on the flowery 4th-floor
terrace, packed with potted plants. Garage parking/bike hire €20/15 per day, wi-fi €2.50
per hour, breakfast €5.

Nicely placed away from the Piazza dei Miracoli mayhem (a 1km walk or bike ride),
this four-star choice on the south side of the Arno is a 68-room oasis of peace and tran-
quillity. Its rooms have wooden floors and high ceilings, and some are nicely frescoed.
Those for four make it a practical, if pricey, family choice.
Kudos to the small terrace garden out the back - a dream for breakfast in summer.
Courtyard parking/bike hire costs €10/12 per day. Room rates vary enormously depending
on the day and the season.

Something of a honeymoon venue, Pisa's dreamy five-star hotel occupies a tastefully re-
stored 14th-century fortified tower house in a quiet street. Some rooms have original fres-
coes and the flowery patio restaurant makes a welcome retreat from the crowds. Garage
parking attracts an additional fee. Book through its website to bag the cheapest deal -
there are lots of seasonal offers.
