babies in swaddling clothes. At the north end of the portico, the false door surrounded by
railings was once a revolving door where unwanted children were left. You can pay €1 to
visit its lovely courtyard (open from 10am-3.30pm Monday to Saturday, and to 1.30pm
Sunday), but the interior is currently closed for major restoration works; it will reopen in
April 2015 as a spanking new Museum of Childhood .
Just off the northeast corner of the piazza is the Museo Archeologico MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Piazza Santissima Annunziata 9b; adult/reduced €4/2; 8.30am-7pm Tue-Fri, 8.30am-2pm Sat & Sun)
whose rich collection of finds, including most of the Medici hoard of antiquities, plunges
you deep into the past and offers an alternative to Renaissance splendour. On the 1st floor
you can either head left into the ancient Egyptian collection or right for the smaller section
of Etruscan and Graeco-Roman art.

1 Santa Croce
Presided over by the massive Franciscan basilica of the same name on the neighbour-
hood's main square, this area has a slightly rough veneer to it.
