On Your Marks
Efficient pre-trip planning of your outdoor adventures ensures you can revel in the Tuscan
thrills without any unexpected spills once in situ.
When to Go?
Lapping up all that fresh mountain and sea air, heady with the scent of wild sage and mari-
time pine, is an integral part of the Tuscan outdoor experience. Spring and autumn with
their abundance of warm dry days, wild flowers and forest fruits, are the prettiest times to
be outdoors. July (not as hot or crowded as August) is the best month for water-sports on
the Med and hiking in the Apuane Alps. Autumn, when the harvests start in the vineyards
and olive groves, has a particularly mellow appeal and, with summer's warmth lingering
well into October, there is plenty of daylight for mellow hikes through dewy mornings,
crunchy leaves and mushroom-rich forests.
Avoid
Easter The first key holiday period of the year for Italians, this two-week slot in late March or April sees too
many people jostle for too little picnic-table and trail space.
August Italians take their summer holidays, crowding trails, cycling routes and roads. On lower terrain, the
intense heat of August can be oppressive.
Autumn Often means slippery wet roads and poor visibility for cyclists.
