(a) Aquatic formation of the fl oating fern
Ceratopteris pteridoides
with the water
lily
Nymphaea
, Turialba, Costa Rica. From Tryon and Tryon 1982. Used with permission from

Ceratopteris
cornuta
. From Tryon and Lugardon 1991. Used with permission from Springer Science and
Business Media, Dordrecht. (c) Fossil spore of
Ceratopteris
about 20 Ma from the Miocene
Cucaracha Formation of Panama. Comparison between modern spores and pollen and micro-
fossils allows identifi cation of the latter. Information on the ecology of the modern plants from
fi eld observations and herbarium label data reveals the kind of paleoenvironment; here, an
aquatic formation from Panama circa 20 Ma similar to a modern Costa Rican formation.
