Definition of Terms
Cadherins: Cell surface proteins that mediate calcium dependent cell-cell adhesion, each
containing an extracellular cadherin (EC) repeat.
Heterophilic binding: h e binding by an adhesion molecule to a dif erent molecule.
Homophilic binding: h e binding of an adhesion to molecule itself on another cell.
Ig-like domain: h e basic structural unit of IgSF members, consisting of two sheets of anti-
parallel β strands which form a sandwich structure, stabilized by a disuli de bridge.
Immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF): A family of proteins that contain at least one Ig-like
domain.
Integrins: Cell adhesion molecules mediating cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion and
consisting of two non-covalently bound subunits (α and β).
