Definition of Terms
Bariatric surgery: Name given to a variety of surgical procedures used to treat obesity. h e
aim of the surgery is to reduce nutrient intake and achieve weight loss.
Endothelial cells: Cells lining the blood vessels and forming a barrier between blood and the
wall or structure of the blood vessels.
Obesity: A body mass index of ≥ 30 kg/m 2 .
Weight loss: A loss in body weight achieved by reducing energy intake relative to intake.
