Definition of Terms
Cytokines: A soluble, hormone-like protein produced by white blood cells that acts as a
messenger between cells.
Epithelium: h e outside layer of cells that covers all the free, open surfaces of the body
including the skin, and mucous membranes that communicate with the outside of the
body.
Endothelium: h e thin layer of cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels, forming
an interface between circulating blood in the lumen and the rest of the vessel wall.
Inl ammation: h e complex biological response of vascular tissues to harmful stimuli, such
as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants. It is a protective attempt by the organism
to remove the injurious stimuli as well as initiate the healing process for the tissue.
Inl ammation can be classii ed as either acute or chronic.
Neutrophil: h e most abundant type of white blood cell in humans, forming an essential
part of the immune system as the i rst line of defense. Neutrophils react within an hour
of tissue injury and are the hallmark of acute inl ammation.
