Aeolian Islands
Vulcano is more of an olfactory than visual experience - the stench of sulphur is omni-
present on the island. You can walk up the 391m Fossa di Vulcano ( Click here ) without a
guide, and see the steaming crater while enjoying the beautiful views of the rest of the
Aeolian Islands to the north.
Don't miss taking a mud bath at the Laghetto di Fanghi ( Click here ), a smelly but exhil-
arating and healing experience - there's even a natural Jacuzzi attached!
Salina has the Aeolians' highest point, Monte Fossa delle Felci ( Click here ; 962m),
and after the two-hour climb, which can be quite tough at times, you'll emerge to the most
magnificent views of the Lingua salt lagoon and all the way to Lipari and Vulcano.
