Ionian Coast
Hit Catania for one of Sicily's most beloved first courses, pasta alla Norma (pasta topped
with eggplant, basil, fresh ricotta and tomatoes), and if you're passing through Messina,
don't miss agghiotta di pesce spada (swordfish with pine nuts, sultanas, capers, olives and
tomatoes). Several other regional specialities are grown on Mt Etna's volcanic slopes, in-
cluding Bronte pistachios, Zafferana Etnea honey and Etna DOC wine.
Syracuse & the Southeast
Celebrate the earthy flavours of the southeast with macco di fave (fava-bean puree with
wild fennel) or lolli con le fave (hand-rolled pasta with fava beans), and don't miss ravioli
di ricotta al sugo di maiale (ricotta ravioli with a pork-meat ragù ). The Syracuse region
is famous for its lemons, blood oranges and tomatoes, and Ragusa is home to the excellent
Ragusano DOP cheese. Local desserts include Modica's spiced chocolate creations and
Noto's fine gelati (ice cream).
