Customs Regulations
Duty-free sales within the EU no longer exist. Goods bought in and exported within the EU incur no additional taxes,
provided duty has been paid somewhere within the EU and the goods are for personal use.
Travellers entering Italy from outside the EU are allowed to import duty free: 200 cigarettes, 1L of spirits, 2L of wine,
60mL of perfume, 250mL of eau de toilette, and other goods up to the value of €175. Anything over this must be declared
and the appropriate duty paid.
On leaving the EU, non-EU citizens can reclaim Imposta di Valore Aggiunto (IVA) value-added tax on purchases equal
to or over €155. The refund, which is around 12%, only applies to purchases made in affiliated outlets that display a 'Tax
Free for Tourists' or similar sign.
Discount Cards
At many state museums and archaeological sites, EU citizens under 18 and over 65 enter free, and those aged between 18
and 25 get a 50% discount. To claim these discounts you'll need a passport, driving licence or ID card. For those under
26, the Euro<26 ( www.euro26.org ) card is universally accepted.
ADMISSION PRICES
We list prices for 'adult/reduced'; the 'reduced' rate refers to the seniors and students discount (in Italy these are al-
most always the same). Children under seven usually go free, though you can count on heavy discounts until the
age of 10.
