Contemporary Sicilian Art
Two artists, Salvatore Fiume (1915-97) and Renato Guttuso (1911-87), mark Sicily's con-
temporary art scene. Guttuso's masterful 1974 painting of the Vucciria market is one of Si-
cily's most impressive contemporary art works. The arresting, vibrant colours are the
product of the artist's innovative approach - he used crumbled bricks to produce the reds,
and burnt wood and candles for the black strokes. It hangs at the Museo dell'Inquisizione
( Click here ) in Palermo.
The best place for a shot in the arm on what's currently going on in Sicily's art world is
Favara's Farm Cultural Park ( Click here ) , where provocative art and social activism go
hand in hand and serve art's great purpose - to try to make a real change.
