The Mafia
For many people, the word 'Mafia' is synonymous with Sicily, thanks to the country's
infamous historical relationship with the organisation and the many films made about
the Cosa Nostra - namely, and most famously,
The Godfather
trilogy. Starting life all
the way back in the 18th century, the Mafia has shaped today's Sicily both through its
criminal activities and, more recently, the brave and crucial anti-Mafia movement,
which has involved a gradual resistance from all levels of Sicilian society.
