In-Depth Information
Most wines are fairly cheap, though (as for any wine) prices vary according to the vin-
tage. In a restaurant a bottle of decent wine should cost you around €15 to €25, with a
table wine (vino da tavola) at around €10.
Sicilian dessert wines are excellent, and are well worth buying to take home. Top of the
list is Marsala's sweet wine; the best (and most widely known) labels are Florio ( Click
here ) and Pellegrino ( www.carlopellegrino.it ) . Sweet Malvasia (from the Aeolian island of Salina)
is a honey-sweet wine whose best producers include Carlo Hauner ( www.hauner.it ) , Capofaro
(capofaro.it/en/malvasia) and Fenech ( Click here ) - just look for one of these names on the
bottle and you'll know you have a good drop. Italy's most famous Moscato (Muscat),
made from zibibbo grapes, is the Passito di Pantelleria from the island of the same name;
it has a deep-amber colour and an extraordinary taste of apricots and vanilla.
The subscription-based Gambero Rosso Wine Guide ( www.gamberorosso.it ) is generally con-
sidered to be the bible of Italian wines and offers plenty of information about Sicilian
wines and wineries.
