A great budget option, this laid-back
pensione
has cool, white rooms, a
pretty entrance courtyard with lemon and olive trees and a multilingual paperback library
for guests' reading pleasure. The roof terrace commands views of the sea one side and the
volcano the other. Two larger rooms with air-con cost extra. Half-board is compulsory in
July and August.

In a 'secret garden'
framed by picturesque rows of cypresses, this six-room B&B is five minutes' walk above
the church on the way to the volcano. Downstairs units include breakfast on the rooftop
terrace but are rather gloomy and cave-like; those further up the hill are nicer, with breezy
semi-private terraces and kitchenettes (but no breakfast).

- the current owner's father counted Ingrid Bergman as an early guest. It's a laid-back
place with white, summery rooms, a large swimming pool, a first-class restaurant and its
own amphitheatre used to screen films and stage theatrical performances.
