Where to Stay
There's no shortage of alluring accommodation options in Sicily. At the budget end of the
price spectrum you can opt for a pensione (guesthouse) or a B&B, both of which will gen-
erally be of one- to three-star standard. Alberghi (hotels), which may range from one star to
five stars, are more expensive. Locande (inns) and affittacamere (rooms for rent) are not in-
cluded in the star classification system; they are usually the cheapest options on offer, al-
though in some areas (such as the Aeolian Islands) the standard can be very high and prices
are adjusted accordingly.
Around Etna and Piano Battaglia in the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Madonie there
are a number of rifugi (mountain chalets), most of which are open all year. Many are oper-
ated by Club Alpino Siciliano.
Agriturismi (working farms and country houses that offer rooms to visitors on holiday)
are becoming more common and are well worth considering, as is the small but slowly
growing number of boutique hotels on the island.

August and Christmas are generally considered high season, while mid-season rates apply
the remainder of the year.
