In contrast to the scruffy portside streets,
La Lampara is a contemporary restaurant serving a modern, creative fish menu. Highly re-
commended is the tuna steak, cooked in sesame seeds and served with balsamic vinegar,
and the chocolate cake with pistachio ice cream.
Hostaria Del Vicolo
MODERN SICILIAN

; Vicolo Sammaritano 10; meals €45-55; closed Sun evening & Mon)
Tucked away in a tiny alley in the Old Town, this formal restaurant is a culinary tour de
force: heavy tablecloths, noiseless service and an ample wine list. The menu is traditional
Sicilian with modern twists, and the fresh pasta is great. Slow Food recommended.
For a
primo
(first course) try the
taglioni al nero di seppia e ricotta salata
(flat strings
of pasta with cuttlefish ink and salted ricotta), while
merluzzo ai fichi secchi
(cod with
dried figs) makes for a superb main course.
Shopping
Ceramiche Gaspare Patti
( 092 599 32 98; Corso Vittorio Emanuele 95)
Sciacca has a long-standing tradition of ceramic
production and there are numerous shops selling brightly coloured crockery. For
something more original look up this Aladdin's cave of a shop in front of the Chiesa
Madre. Gaspare Patti prides himself on his idiosyncratic style and his shop is packed with
strange and original creations, well worth a look even if you're not going to buy.
