In-Depth Information
( 093 294 42 47; Corso Umberto I 228-230; meals €15-21; Wed-Mon) On Modica's main drag, this
attractive restaurant mixes rustic decor, elegantly dressed waiters, and very reasonable
prices on Sicilian specialities like cunigghju â stimpirata (sweet and sour rabbit).

Fattoria delle Torri
( 093 275 12 86; Vico Napolitano 14, Modica Alta; meals from €35; closed Sun evening & Mon) This is
one of Modica's smartest restaurants. Housed in an elegant 18th-century palazzo, it has a
beautiful dining area with tables set under stone arches and bay windows looking onto a
small internal garden. The seafood is particularly gorgeous, especially when combined
with a crisp, dry white wine such as Cerasuolo di Vittoria.
La Locanda del Colonnello
( 093 275 24 23; Vico Biscari 6; meals €25-30; lunch & dinner Wed-Mon) This Slow Food restaurant
is a fantastic place to try Sicilian specialities with an original twist - the macco di fave
with roasted octopus is a winner. Also try the ravioli stuffed with ricotta and marjoram in
a pork sauce. A real feast is roast lamb with potatoes. Finish it all off with a smooth gelo
di limone (lemon jelly).

Orientation
Modica is divided into two parts: Modica Alta (Upper Modica) and Modica Bassa (Lower
Modica). Whether driving or coming by public transport you'll arrive in Modica Bassa.
The main street here, Corso Umberto I, forms the bottom of the V-shaped wedge on which
the historic centre sits. Most hotels and restaurants are in Modica Bassa, within easy walk-
ing distance of Corso Umberto, although the cathedral and a number of churches are in
the high town. It's a fairly tough climb to the top.
