CATHEDRAL
( www.cattedralenoto.it ; Piazza Municipio; 9am-1pm & 3-8pm) Pride of place in Noto goes to the ren-
ovated San Nicolò Cathedral. Following its dome's collapse and subsequent restructuring,
the cathedral was scrubbed of centuries of dust and dirt and reopened in June 2007, once
again gleaming in its peachy glow.
The re-opening was a major event in town, with the inhabitants keen to see the cathed-
ral looking brand new.

PALACE
( 320 5568038; www.palazzonicolaci.it ; Via Nicolaci; adult/reduced €4/2; 10am-1pm & 3-7.30pm) In the
Palazzo Villadorata, the wrought-iron balconies are supported by a pantomime of grot-
esque figures. Although empty of furnishings, the brocaded walls and frescoed ceilings of
the palazzo give an idea of the sumptuous lifestyle of Sicilian nobles, as re-created in the
Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa novel Il Gattopardo (The Leopard).
Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore

(Corso Vittorio Emanuele) Situated towards the grand Porta Reale is the Chiesa del Santissimo
Salvatore with its adjoining nunnery, which was reserved for the daughters of local nobil-
ity. The interior is the most impressive in Noto, but unfortunately it is closed to the public.
The fountain suspended on a wall next to it remained after Noto's streets were lowered in
1840 to facilitate the movement of carriages.

(Corso Vittorio Emanuele; admission €2; 9.30am-1pm & 3-7pm) Offering great views of the cathedral,
this church was built by the baroque maestro Rosario Gagliardi between 1745 and 1758.
The oval-plan interior is typically lavish, although the main drawcard is the panoramic
view from the rooftop terrace.
