Trattoria Archimede
( 093 16 97 01; Via Gemmellaro 8; set menus €13-18, meals €28; Mon-Sat)
Although this Ortygia eat-
ery serves its fair share of tourists, there's no denying its historic credentials - it has been
in business since 1938. But while times change, the restaurant's loyalty to local seafood
remains entrenched and the menu is distinctly fishy, with such crowd-pleasers as
tagliolini
al nero di seppie
(string-like pasta with cuttlefish ink) and
pesce all'acqua pazza
(fish
cooked with garlic, tomatoes, capers and olives).

Trattoria la Foglia
( 093 16 62 33;
www.lafoglia.it
; Via Capodieci 21; meals €30-35; Wed-Mon Apr-Oct)
Sporting a bizarre
look that's half Edwardian country house, half boho chic, this is one Syracuse restaurant
where the decor is as memorable as the food. Classical music is piped into the brocaded
dining room as diners sit down to a menu that matches heart-warming starters with
homemade pasta and seafood staples such as grilled
pesce spada
(swordfish) and
polpette
di tonno
(tuna meatballs).

Gran Caffè del Duomo
( 093 12 15 44; Piazza del Duomo 18)
You'd normally avoid a place like this, thinking it
screams 'location plus expense', but a reasonable tourist menu and prime position in this
beautiful square makes it a viable option.
It's the best vantage point on the square: the perfect people-watching perch and a great
place to enjoy a languid glass of wine.
Piano B
( 0931 6 68 51; Via Cairoli 18; pizza €5-9.50, salads €5.50-15, grilled meat €15-22; closed Mon)
Brisk,
friendly service complements the trendy, casual atmosphere at this eatery just west of
Ortygia. It's popular with young Syracusans for its pizzas, grilled meat and extensive
salad menu.
