La Medusa
( 093 16 14 03; Via S Teresa 21-23; meals €25-30; Tue-Sun)
This is one of the best known and
most popular restaurants in Ortygia. It made its name serving delicious couscous, but
chef-owner Kamel also knows his way around a fish − the
antipasto del mare
(seafood
starter) and
fritto misto
(mixed fish fry) come highly recommended. But beware, helpings
are enormous so be careful not to over-order. Service is friendly and accommodating.
You will need to book ahead.
Le Baronie
( 093 16 88 84;

; Via Gargallo 26; meals €25-30; Tue-Sun)
Offering a bois-
terous atmosphere in an old Catalan-Gothic mansion, Le Baronie prides itself on tradition-
al cuisine with a twist, such as swordfish with a pepper-and-brandy sauce. There is also a
pleasant garden dotted with sarcophagi.

Jonico-a Rutta 'e Ciauli
( 093 16 55 40; Riviera Dionisio il Grande 194; pizzas €4-7, meals €25-35; Wed-Mon Jun-Sep)
It's a long
and not particularly enticing hike to this seafront restaurant, but once you're there you'll
appreciate the effort. Inside it's all exposed brickwork and rusty farm tools; outside on the
terrace it's pure bliss, with the sun in your face, a cooling sea breeze and dreamy views.
Not surprisingly, fish features heavily on the menu.
Try the
spaghetti alla palermitana
(with sardines and fennel) and
orata c'aranci
(sea
bream cooked in orange juice). Alternatives include grilled steaks and evening pizzas.

Near the cathedral, the Pescomare serves a good
