Formidable Norman strongholds straddle the hilltops throughout the Sicilian coun-
tryside, but perhaps nowhere as dramatically as at Caccamo. The castle's spiky crenella-
tions and the underlying crag appear fused into a single impregnable mass, towering above
the valley floor. Climb up top and survey the vast domains below, then stop in for lunch
downstairs under the atmospheric brick-and-stone arches of the castle's former grain stores.
You'll feel transported back to the Middle Ages, yet modern downtown Palermo is only an
hour's bus ride away.
