a pew on Syracuse's tiny Lido Maniace - a rocky platform of sun beds and shades where
you can dip into the water. Otherwise, swim off one of the wooden platforms near the Gi-
udecca.

action, Biblios Cafe is a well-known cafe-cum-bookshop that organises a whole range of
cultural activities, including visits to local vineyards, art classes and language courses.
Italian lessons, which emphasise everyday conversational language, can be organised on
an individual basis (€25 per hour) or as part of a course lasting from a week to a month
(per one/four weeks €220/700).

Although not as picturesque as Ortygia, the mainland city boasts a number of fascinating
archaeological sights. The most compelling is the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis to
the north of the city centre, but you'll also find plenty of interest at the city's renowned ar-
chaeological museum, the Museo Archeologico Paolo Orsi. Underground, an extensive
network of catacombs dates from the Roman era.
