TOP OF CHAPTER
Aci Trezza
A few kilometres south of Acireale, Aci Trezza is a small fishing village with a lively
seafront and a number of good restaurants. Offshore, a series of surreal, jagged basalt
rocks, the Scogli dei Ciclopi, rise out of the sea. These are the mythical missiles that the
blinded Cyclops, Polyphemus (who lived in Etna), is supposed to have thrown at the flee-
ing Odysseus. Aci Trezza is also celebrated as the setting of I Malavoglia, Giovanni
Verga's 19th-century literary masterpiece of life in a poor, isolated fishing community.
Sights & Activities
Seafront
The principal activity in Aci Trezza is hanging out on the seafront, sunbathing in the day -
wooden platforms are set up over the black volcanic rocks - and waltzing up and down
after dark. You can enjoy the spectacle from one of the lungomare (seafront promenade)
bars.
The Café de Mar (Lungomare Ciclopi; 8pm-late) , next to Grand Hotel i Faraglioni, is ideal
with its white sofas and armchairs scattered across a palm-shaded garden.
To explore the coast's caves, coves and bays, there are a number of operators at the port
offering boat tours. One such, Vaporetto Polifemo (
NEIGHBOURHOOD
095 27 73 70; www.vaporettopolifemo.it ) runs
daily excursions along the coast from €12.
