AROUND TAORMINA
TOP OF CHAPTER
Giardini-Naxos
POP 9560
The unpretentious resort of Giardini-Naxos is a popular alternative to more expensive
Taormina. Action is centred on a long parade of hotels, bars, pizzerias and souvenir shops
strung along the beach. It heaves in summer but outside of the high season (Easter to Octo-
ber) there's nothing going on and you won't miss much if you pass it by.
Sights & Activities
BEACH
Beach
Giardini's long beach (mainly sand and coarse grey pebbles) curves around the crescent-
shaped bay between Capo Taormina and Capo Schisò, a lick of prehistoric lava at the
southern end. There is a small spiaggia libera (free beach), but most of it is given over to
lidos (private beach clubs).
You will pay around €2.50 for entry, €5 for a sun lounge and €3 for an umbrella. If you
fancy a bit of exercise, canoes can be hired for about €7 per hour.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
Greek Ruins
You'd never know it to look at it, but Giardini-Naxos is the oldest Greek settlement in Si-
cily; its origins date to 735 BC. You can visit the rather scant remains of the original settle-
ment - a 300m stretch of wall, a small temple and a couple of other structures - at the
southern end of the seafront road.
There's also a small museum (
9am-7pm) , with bits

and bobs uncovered during the excavation.
