Messina is the main point of arrival for ferries and hydrofoils from the Italian mainland.

Tourist ( 800 627414; www.carontetourist.it ) serves Villa San Giovanni (passenger/car €2.50/37,
25 minutes). RFI/Bluferries ( www.rfi.it ; Porto di Messina, Piazzale Don Blasco) operates frequent
passenger-only ferries to/from Reggio di Calabria (€4, 35 minutes) and car ferries to/from
Villa San Giovanni (passenger/car €2/28, 35 minutes). Ustica Lines ( 090 36 40 44;
www.usticalines.it ; Via Vittorio Emanuele II) runs hydrofoils to/from Reggio di Calabria (€3.50, 30
minutes, six to 11 daily summer) and Lipari (€24.20, 1½ hours, five daily summer, once
daily winter).
BUS & TRAM
Giuntabus ( 090 67 57 49; Piazza della Repubblica) runs a service to Milazzo (€4, 50 minutes, 15
daily Monday to Saturday, three Sunday) for connections to the Aeolian Islands. Interbus (
090 66 17 54; www.interbus.it ; Piazza della Repubblica 6) runs a regular service to Taormina (€4.20,
1½ hours, hourly Monday to Saturday, twice Sunday), while SAIS Autolinee ( 090 77 19 14;
www.saisautolinee.it ; Piazza della Repubblica 6) serves Palermo (€15.80, 2¾ hours, at least four daily
Monday to Saturday, three Sunday), Catania (€8.30, 1½ hours, hourly Monday to
Saturday, 10 Sunday) and Catania airport (€9.10, two hours, at least nine daily Monday to
Saturday, six Sunday). In town, an electric tram runs from Piazza Cairoli via the train sta-
tion up to the Museo Regionale. Buy tickets (single €1.30) from tabacchi (tobacco shops).
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
For Palermo, Milazzo (connections to the Aeolian Islands), Taormina, Catania and Syra-
cuse, turn right from the docks and follow Via Vittorio Emanuele II along the waterfront
up to Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia. Here, double back on Corso Cavour and turn right into
Viale Boccetta, following the green A20 autostrada (motorway) signs. Car hire is avail-

PARKING
If you have no luck parking on the street (blue lines denote pay-and-display meter park-
ing), there's a useful multistorey car park, Parcheggio Cavallotti (Via I Settembre;
