( 090 71 14 18; Via Loggia dei Mercanti 9; pizzas €6, meals €25; Mon-Sat) With its warm wooden in-
terior and prime location - just behind the Duomo - this cosy hostelry is a good bet for
classic coastal cuisine. The menu features all the usual suspects - pizza, pasta with sea-
food, grilled meat and fish - as well as a few novelties such as risotto gamberi e curry
(prawn and curry risotto).
In summer, tables flood the outside area, creating a buzzing street-side atmosphere.

Orientation
Driving in Messina is not an especially pleasant experience, although once you've made it
through to the city centre, the grid system makes navigation a bit easier. The main things
to know are that the principal streets, Via Garibaldi and Via Vittorio Emanuele II, run par-
allel to the sea, and that the main transport hub is Piazza della Repubblica, at the southern
end of the waterfront. Here you'll find the train station and intercity bus stops; Bluferries
also dock near here. To get to the city centre from Piazza della Repubblica, turn left into
Via Giuseppe La Farina and take the first right into Via Tommaso Cannizzaro to reach
Piazza Cairoli.
