In-Depth Information
and Antonio Cacetta ( 090 98 60 23; Vico Salina 10) are among the numerous outfits running boat
tours out of Porto Scari. The two most popular itineraries are a three-hour round-the-is-
land daytime cruise (€25), including an hour of free time to explore Ginostra and a swim-
ming break at Strombolicchio (the rock islet jutting out of the water off the north coast),
and a 1½-hour sunset excursion (€20) to watch the Sciara del Fuoco explosions from the
sea.
Beaches
Stromboli's black sandy beaches are the best in the Aeolian archipelago. The most access-
ible and popular swimming and sunbathing is at Ficogrande , a strip of rocks and black vol-
canic sand about a 10-minute walk northwest of the hydrofoil dock. Further-flung beaches
worth exploring are at Piscità to the west and Forgia Vecchia , about 300m south of the port, a
long stretch of black pebbles curving around a tranquil bay and backed by the volcano's
green slopes.

HISTORIC BUILDING
(Via Vittorio Emanuele 22) This rusty-red house is where Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini
lived together while filming Stromboli , Terra di Dio in 1949. Their liaison provoked a
scandal in the film world, as both were married to other people at the time. Descending
from San Vincenzo church on Stromboli's main square, look for a plaque marking the
house on the right-hand side.
You can't actually go inside, but it's interesting to see the scene of such a famous ro-
mance.

Eating & Drinking
Eating out in Stromboli is an expensive business as most food items have to be shipped in.
Seafood is ubiquitous but pizza provides a good alternative.
