In-Depth Information
Near Panarea's prehistoric village, about 30 minutes south of San Pietro, steps lead down
to this gorgeous little cove with a rock-strewn beach and dreamy aquamarine waters.
Villaggio Preistorico
Thirty minutes' walk south of San Pietro, dramatically sited on Punta Milazzese, an elev-
ated headland surrounded by the sea, these 23 stone huts with round foundations are rem-
nants of a prehistoric village dating back to the 14th century BC. Pottery found here
shows distinctly Minoan influences, lending credence to the theory that the islanders
maintained trading ties with the Cretans.
To get here, climb the steep series of steps south from Spiaggetta Zimmari, then follow
the signs.

BEACH
Spiaggetta Zimmari
This small stretch of brown sand backed by a steep dune, about 20 minutes south of San
Pietro, is Panarea's only sandy beach and gets packed in summer.
Spiaggia Fumarola
To the north of San Pietro, this stone beach with full-on views of Stromboli is reached via
a steep, winding descent north of Ditella. Outside peak months this is an isolated spot
ideal for a quiet swim, but in July and August, the sun-seekers move in en masse and the
ringing of mobile phones becomes incessant.
BEACH
Punta del Corvo
At 421m, this rocky outcropping is Panarea's highest point and a popular day-hiking des-
tination. Two trails (marked 1 and 2 on local maps) converge here, and can be combined
into a scenic full-island circuit. Allow about four hours for the full round trip, and be
ready for some steep climbs and descents.
From up top, there are spectacular views of all six of the neighboring Aeolian Islands.
