In-Depth Information
Once you've reached the summit (the last 100m are particularly tough), the views are
breathtaking, particularly looking west towards Filicudi and Alicudi, and also from the
southeast ridge where you can look down over the Lingua salt lagoon and over to Lipari
and Vulcano. To get to the trailhead by public transport take the bus from Santa Marina
Salina to Malfa, then change for a Rinella-bound bus and ask the driver to let you off at
the sanctuary.
Santa Marina Salina
Salina's main port, Santa Marina is a typical island settlement with steeply stacked white-
washed houses rising up the hillside. The principal street is Via Risorgimento , a lively
pedestrian-only strip lined by cafes and boutiques. It's not a big place, and there are no
specific sights, but it makes an ideal base for exploring the rest of the island.
TOWN
Lingua
Three kilometres south of Santa Marina Salina, the tiny village of Lingua is a popular
summer hang-out, with a couple of hotels, a few trattorias and a small beach. Its main fea-
ture is the salt lagoon , which sits under an old lighthouse at the end of the village. The
centre of the summer scene is seafront Piazza Marina Garibaldi.
Until quite recently the salt works were an important local employer, but now the la-
goon only provides sustenance for the migrating birds that pass through in spring and au-
tumn en route to and from Africa. Lingua's most famous business venture these days is
Da Alfredo, a bar/gelateria famous across Sicily for its flavourful granite .
TOWN
Malfa
Tumbling down the hillside to a small shingle beach, this settlement on Salina's north
coast is the island's largest, though you'd never guess it from the tranquil atmosphere.
About halfway between the town entrance and the sea is the main church square, focal
point of Malfa's laid-back social life, from which sloping lanes fan up and down the hill-
sides.
TOWN
Pollara
Don't miss a trip to sleepy Pollara, sandwiched dramatically between the sea and the steep
slopes of an extinct volcanic crater on Salina's western edge. The gorgeous beach here
was used as a location in the 1994 film Il Postino , although the land access route to the
beach has since been closed due to landslide danger.
