Trattoria Maniaci Pina
( 368 668555; Gelso; meals €25-30; May-mid-Oct) On the south side of the island, beside a
black-sand beach, this atmospheric, down-to-earth trattoria serves hefty portions of fresh-
caught fish at affordable prices. Two local men do the fishing, and their mothers do the
cooking.
Orientation
Boats dock at the Porto di Levante. From here it's a short walk - bear right as you exit the
harbour area - to the fanghi (mud baths), hidden behind a small hillock of rocks. Continu-
ing beyond the mud pools, the road leads to Porto di Ponente, where you'll find a number
of hotels and Spiaggia Sabbia Nera (Black Sand Beach), a long stretch of black sand. For
the Fossa di Vulcano, bear left as you disembark and continue approximately 1km along
the base of the volcano until you see the ' escursioni cratere' sign on your left indicating
the way up.

Getting There & Around
BICYCLE
Bikes can be hired from Sprint da Luigi, which can also organise island tours.
BOAT
Vulcano is an intermediate stop between Milazzo (ferry/hydrofoil €10.80/13.90, two
hours/45 minutes) and Lipari (ferry/hydrofoil €4.70/5.80, 25/10 minutes), with regular
services in both directions. Ticket offices are near the dock at Porto di Levante.
