In-Depth Information
The pleasant hour-long downhill stroll from Quattropani to Acquacalda follows a paved
but lightly travelled road hugging Lipari's north shore, affording spectacular views of
Salina and a distant Stromboli. Take the bus to Quattropani (€1.90), then simply proceed
downhill on the main road 5km to Acquacalda, where you can catch the bus (€1.55) back
to Lipari.
Monte Pilato
At Lipari's northeastern corner, Monte Pilato is a mountain of pumice and obsidian
formed by a volcanic explosion in AD 700. A 2km trail leads to its summit (476m), start-
ing from Ristorante Da Lauro in the town of Acquacalda. Up top, there's a nice view of
the fields of solidified obsidian known as Rocche Rosse (Red Rocks).
