In-Depth Information
Spiaggia Valle i Muria
This dark, pebbly beach on the southwestern shore, lapped by clean waters and surroun-
ded by dramatic cliffs, is one of Lipari's best swimming and sunbathing spots. The turn-
off, about 3km west of Lipari Town, is easily reachable by car, scooter or local bus; follow
the road towards Pianoconte until you see signs. From here, it's a steep 15-minute down-
hill walk.
The route down to the beach starts as a paved road, but eventually narrows to a dirt
trail, passing through an idyllic landscape of long grass, flowers and cacti. Slogging back
up the hill is a real workout, so come prepared for the day with water, sunscreen and a pic-
nic lunch.
In good weather, Lipari resident Barni ( 339 8221583, 349 1839555) serves food and drinks
from his rustic cavelike bar on the beach, and also provides boat transfers to and from
Marina Corta in Lipari (€5/10 one way/return). This is an especially nice way to get home
after a long day on the beach. Navigating through the faraglioni (rock spires) of Lipari's
western shore at sunset, with Vulcano's crater smoking on the horizon, is an unforgettable
experience.
BEACH
Quattrocchi
Lipari's best views are from a celebrated viewpoint known as Quattrocchi (Four Eyes),
3km west of town. Follow the road for Pianoconte and look on your left about 300m bey-
ond the turn-off for Spiaggia Valle i Muria. You'll know you're in the right place when
you see a sensational coastal panorama unfold in front of you.
Stretching off to the south, great, grey cliffs plunge into the sea, while in the distance
plumes of sinister smoke rise from the dark heights of neighbouring Vulcano.
VIEW POINT
Spiaggia Bianca
About 4km north of Lipari Town, this is the most popular beach on the island, its name a
reference to the layers of pumice dust that once covered it. These have been slowly
washed away by the rough winter seas, leaving it a dark shade of grey.
BEACH
Canneto
The nearest beach to Lipari Town is the long, pebbly strip at Canneto, 3km north of town
on the other side of a jutting headland.
