Getting There & Away
AIR
The only way to reach the Aeolians by air is to take a helicopter. Panarea-based Air Panarea (
090 983 44 28; www.airpanarea.com ) operates transfers to the Aeolians year-round from points
in Sicily, including Catania, Palermo and Taormina, and from the Italian mainland (Rome,
Naples, Salerno, Reggio di Calabria). Prices cover the entire six-seat helicopter and vary
according to departure point and destination; for details, contact Air Panarea via its online
form.
SEASICKNESS
A trip to the Aeolians inevitably involves time at sea, either on hydrofoils, ferries or tour boats. Seasickness can
make this difficult and at times quite nauseating (as we can vouch for!). If you do suffer from seasickness, locals
recommend you sit at the back of the hydrofoil/boat and eat something dry and salty. If that doesn't work, ask a
pharmacist for qualcosa per mal di mare (something for seasickness).
BOAT
The main point of departure for the Aeolians is Milazzo, from where there are regular year-
round car ferries and hydrofoils. Lipari is the Aeolians' main point of arrival and its trans-
port hub, with connections to all the other islands. Services are most frequent between June
