Palermo is accessible on the A20-E90 toll road from Messina, and from Catania
(A19-E932) via Enna. Trapani and Marsala are also easily accessible from Palermo by
motorway (A29), while Agrigento and Palermo are linked by the SS121/189, a good state
road through the interior of the island.
TRAIN
Regular services leave from Palermo Centrale train station (Piazza Giulio Cesare; 6am-9pm) to
Messina (from €11.80; 2¾ to 3½ hours, hourly), Catania (from €12.50, three to 5¾ hours,
six to 10 daily, including one direct train on weekdays) and Agrigento (€8.30, two hours,
eight to 10 daily), as well as to nearby towns such as Cefalù (from €5.15, 45 minutes to
one hour, hourly). There are also Intercity trains to Reggio di Calabria, Naples and Rome.
Inside the station, there are ATMs, toilets and left-luggage facilities (first five hours €5
flat fee, next seven hours €0.70 per hour, all subsequent hours €0.30 per hour; office
staffed 8am-8pm).
Getting Around
TO/FROM THE AIRPORT
Prestia e Comandè ( 091 58 63 51; www.prestiaecomande.it ) runs an efficient half-hourly bus service
between 5am and 11pm that transfers passengers from the airport to the centre of Palermo,
dropping people off outside the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi and Palermo Centrale train
station. To find the bus, follow the signs past the downstairs taxi rank and around the
corner to the right. Tickets for the journey, which takes anywhere from 35 to 50 minutes
depending on traffic, cost €6.10 one-way or €11 return and are purchased on the bus.
Return journeys to the airport run with the same frequency and pick up at the same points.
This is definitely the best way to travel to Palermo from the airport.
The Trinacria Express ( 091 704 40 07) runs between the airport and the train station (€5.80,
45 minutes to 1¼ hours). Trains depart from Palermo Centrale station every 30 to 60
minutes between 4.55am and 8.09pm, returning from the airport between 5.54am and
10.05pm.
There is a taxi rank outside the arrivals hall and the set fare to/from central Palermo is
€45, and all the major car-hire companies are represented at the airport.
