In-Depth Information
ging name to Via Ruggero Settimo at Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, the gateway to the new city.
At Piazza Castelnuovo (also commonly known as Piazza Politeama), it continues into
Viale della Libertà, a grand boulevard lined with 19th-century apartment blocks.
Via Maqueda is bisected by Corso Vittorio Emanuele, running east to west from the
port of La Cala to the cathedral and Palazzo dei Normanni. The intersection of Via
Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele, known famously as the Quattro Canti (Four
Corners), divides historic Palermo into four traditional quarters: La Kalsa (southeast),
Vucciria (northeast), Il Capo (northwest) and Albergheria (southwest). These quarters
contain the majority of Palermo's sights.
Parallel to Via Maqueda is another major street, Via Roma. A one-way system moves
traffic north up Via Roma from the train station and south down Via Maqueda.
