the city was flooded by impoverished rural labourers and gripped by Mafia violence.
The middle classes moved out into newly built housing estates, escaping the new wave
of violence (and the bad plumbing). By the 1980s the city was virtually a European pari-
ah, notching up weekly murders. After the Mafia super-trials of the 1990s, Palermo slowly
began to emerge from its troubled past and city authorities embarked upon an ambitious
program of revitalisation. Walk through the ancient quarters of La Kalsa, Vucciria and Al-
bergheria today and you will notice restoration projects galore, signalling the fact that this
great city is working towards reclaiming its proud past and forging a prosperous future.
