that the desired expansion can take place.
It is difficult to estimate the amount of shrinkage or expansion of a particular wall be-
cause the wall must slide on the soil beneath, and the resulting frictional resistance may
be sufficient so that movement will be greatly reduced or even prevented. A rough value
for the width of an expansion joint can be determined from the following expression, in
