If the moments in the weak direction ( y axis here) are rather small compared to
bending in the strong direction ( x axis), it is rather common to neglect the smaller mo-
ment. This practice is probably reasonable as long as e y is less than about 20% of e x ,
since the Bresler expression will show little reduction for P ni . For the example just
solved, an e y equal to 50% of e x caused the axial load capacity to be reduced by approx-
imately 40%.
Example 10.9 illustrates the design of a column subject to biaxial bending. The
Bresler expression, which is of little use in the proportioning of such members, is used to
