Barcelona is to modern art what Greece is to ruined
temples. Three of the figures at the vanguard of 20th-cen-
tury avant-gardism - Picasso, Miró and Dalí - were either
born or spent their formative years here. Their powerful
legacy is stamped all over Barcelona in museums and
public installations. In the contemporary art world, Cata-
lonia continues to be an incubator for innovative works,
with instrumental figures like Antoni Tàpies leading the
way.
