Barcelona's architectural gift to the world was Modern-
isme, a flamboyant Catalan creation that erupted in the
late 19th century. Barcelona's other great architectural
epoch was during the Middle Ages, when mercantile
wealth fuelled the creation of magnificent Gothic build-
ings. More recently, the city has continued to host
cutting-edge designs and dramatic urban renewal pro-
jects that all began in the makeover before and after the
1992 Olympics.
