Castilian Dominance
Overstretched, racked by civil disobedience and decimated by the Black Death, Catalonia
began to wobble by the 14th century. When the last count of Wilfred the Hairy's dynasty
expired without leaving an heir, the Crown of Aragón was passed to a noble of Castile.
Soon these two Spanish kingdoms merged, with Catalonia left as a very junior partner. As
business shifted from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic after the discovery of the Americas
in 1492, Catalans were increasingly marginalised from trade.
