A Catalan Nation
Sensitivity over regional identity is never far from Spanish political debates, particularly as
public perception has been that Catalonia makes substantial financial contributions to the
state but often gets a proportionally tiny piece of the pie. Perhaps angered by this, Bar-
celona staged a symbolic referendum on Catalan independence in 2011. Little more than
20% of eligible voters turned out, although 90% of them voted in favour of independence.
