Economic Woes
In 2012, the Spanish economy slipped into recession for its second time in three years.
Unemployment levels in the city have risen above 20% (slightly lower than Spain's nearly
24%). Meanwhile austerity measures prescribed by bureaucrats - slashing budgets, raising
taxes and freezing public sector pay - have done nothing to alleviate the hardship.
Anger at the labour reforms and dramatic spending cuts has led to nationwide strikes,
with tens of thousands marching in the streets of Barcelona in 2012 (joining millions of
protesting Spaniards nationwide).
