Waiters with a discreetly knowing smile will attend to your cocktail needs here. The house
drink, taken at the bar or in one of the plush green leather lounges, is a safe bet. The gin
and tonic comes in an enormous mug-sized glass - a couple of these and you're well on
the way! Out the back is a restaurant, Speakeasy (

This groovy space - with psychedelic colouring in the
tables and bar stools, high white walls out back for exhibitions and events, a nice selection
of teas, pastries and snacks, all set on a pleasant pedestrian strip just behind the university
- is perfect for a morning session on your laptop or a civilised evening tipple while admir-
ing the art.

; Carrer de Buenos Aires 60; 9am-2.30pm Mon-Fri,
9am-3.30pm Sat & Sun; Diagonal)
This narrow bar has an appealingly busy feel, with big
windows along Carrer de Casanova revealing the crowds and traffic of nearby Avinguda
Diagonal. Perch at the bar for a couple of low-key afternoon drinks while you ponder the
evening ahead (some of the area's key bars and clubs are just over the other side of Avin-
guda Diagonal).
MEDITERRÁNEO
Bar
( 678 211253; Carrer de Balmes 129; 11pm-3am; Diagonal)
This smoky, studenty jam
joint is a great hang-out that attracts a mostly casual student set. Sometimes the young
performers are surprisingly good.
