Domènech i Montaner wanted to create a unique environment that would also cheer up
patients. Among artists who contributed statuary, ceramics and artwork was the prolific
Eusebi Arnau. The hospital facilities have been transferred to a new complex on the
premises, freeing up the century-old structures, which are being restored to their former
glory in a plan to convert the complex into an international centre on the Mediterranean.
Guided tours are the only way the curious get inside this unique site - but the building
might one day open up for more regular visits.
