Drinking & Nightlife
The northeastern end of the beach on the Barceloneta waterfront near Port Olímpic is a
pleasant corner of evening chic that takes on a balmy, almost Caribbean air in the warmer
months. A selection of restaurant-lounges and trendy bar-clubs vies for your attention.
Several other attractive options are scattered about away from this core of night-time enter-
tainment.
XAMPANYERIA CAN PAIXANO
Wine Bar
( 93 310 08 39; Carrer de la Reina Cristina 7; tapas €3-6; 9am-10.30pm Mon-Sat, to 1pm Sun;
Barceloneta)
This lofty old champagne bar has a long run on a winning formula. The stand-
ard poison is bubbly rosé in elegant little glasses, combined with bite-sized
bocadillos
(filled rolls). This place is jammed to the rafters, and elbowing your way to the bar to ask
harried staff for menu items can be a titanic struggle.
ABSENTA
Bar
( Carrer de Sant Carles 36; Barceloneta)
Decorated with old paintings, vintage lamps and curi-
ous sculpture (including a dangling butterfly woman and face-painted TVs), this whimsical
and creative drinking den takes its liquor seriously. Stop in for the house-made vermouth or
for more bite try one of many absinthes on hand.
OPIUM MAR
Club
( 902 267486;
www.opiummar.com
; Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta 34; 8pm-6am; Ciutadella
Vila Olímpica)
This seaside dance place has a spacious dance floor that attracts a mostly for-
eign crowd. It only begins to fill from about 3am and is best in summer, when you can spill
onto a terrace overlooking the beach. The beachside outdoor section works as a chilled
restaurant-cafe by day.
